Review:Social Networks for Musicians - Flotones.com
By admin on Apr 13, 2008 in Uncategorized
Flotones.com is a social networking site allowing you to sell your music content as ringtones for your mobile phone. They also convert your album artwork to wallpaper for your mobile phone. Both the ringtone and wallpaper can be purchased directly from their site.
The service is free to sign-up. After the sign-up process, you upload your album/ track and your album artwork. Flotones.com creates a ringtone from the song and then makes it available for purchase on the site. You can also choose to make the ringtone yourself. There weren’t any notices on bandwidth limits or space restrictions. I’m presuming an artist has an unlimited amount of storage space to upload your songs, albums, and album art.
The wallpaper’s purchase price is $1.99, while a song sells for $1.00. The payment terms are a 50-50 split, minus transactions costs that Flotones pays to handle the purchase.
When I initially signed-up for the service, there was an error in the sign-in process. It looked like some type of unhandled error in the database, but it wasn’t clear the specific problem. I went back to the sign-up page only to be told that my email was already in use. Luckily, I did receive an email with my login information and I was able to proceed smoothly from there.
According to their contract, Flotones.com has a distribution agreement with other music services, specifically iTunes, Napster, Jamster, and MP3Tunes.
Here are some stats (approximated at the time review):- 1,661 individual songs on the site
- 1,875 ringtones
- 652 artists
Overall, it looks like an interesting site. It would make a great addition to the arsenal of band to provide ringtones to their fans.
