Online press kit

After you get the attention of a bar manager, A&R rep, a label, or some other heavyweight in the industry, they will request more information about you. The media kit is the best way to handle these inquiries.

Create a page or section on your website for the following information:
- Demo (in MP3 format) - Cut 30-45 seconds from 3-4 of your best songs and put them together. The demo should showcase your band in the shortest amount of time. You want the listener to get a good idea of your band without the need to listen to your entire album. If they like what they hear, they’ll take the time to listen to the album later.

- Photo of the band/artist -Put your head shot up on the site.

- Bio - Write a bio that describes your band, the history, music style, and it’s members.

- Links to any press - It is best to put links to the original articles for press. Otherwise, you should try to quote the reference and list the source of the quote and the date of the coverage.

- Tour dates, if you’ve been touring lately - This can be simply displayed as a calendar on the site or a list of upcoming shows.

Here are some things that are very convincing, but they need to be used carefully:

- Reviews from past tours - Include hard data from previous gigs. Put the venue name, attendance numbers, and the time that you played. I would not put this information publicly on the web unless you have had a really good attendance record.

- Video - It is becoming cheaper to create video today and a professional video could help convince the person you are trying to reach. You should go as high on quality as you can afford. Looking professional goes a long way in the eyes of management. Do not send shaky cell phone video from one of the local bars.

When you have inquiries about your band, send them to your press page. The page should answer most of their questions. You could also combine all of these files into a single zip file and send it to people, but that method is becoming frowned upon, since many email programs have such strong spam filters and virus scanners.
