Making a living versus making a million

Every band dreams of making it big. They go to sleep with visions of record contracts, screaming fans, big money, concert stages, and professional recordings. They make HUGE sacrifices for many, many years just to try and achieve this dream. Bands travel around the bar circuit in one van for months upon months. They play to ornery crowds and deal with unappreciative bar owners. They barely eat so they can afford gas. Many spend 5-10 years living like this. All so they can make it big.

This leads to one question I often hear. How do you use social media to get huge?

I think that’s missing the point.

If you want to conquer the world, you are going to need help. And a record company of some sort is going to be needed. But before you take over the world, you need to take the first step - building your fan base.

The technology tools that are available today allow you find and discover fans without sacrificing your life for years upon years. Clever bands will figure out ways to actually make a living while they are pursuing their dream.

Can you imagine that? Getting paid a reasonable salary to play and make music?

That idea was foreign to people a few years ago. The common philosophy was - get a band, practice, get on the road, get on the road, and get on the road. Now, a few hours configuring simple technology tools and your success is suddenly in your hands.

You have much more potential for making money at your craft. Without all the sacrifice.
